There are 13 National Forests and one National Grassland within Utah, Nevada, western Wyoming, southern Idaho, and a small portion of California.

This paper presents long-term resource production from National Forests in the Northern and Intermountain Regions, Regions 1 and 4, respectively. A historical data series of timber harvest and grazing levels on National Forests and lumber production and prices for these regions is developed.

Besides the National Forest lands, there area bout million acres on 19 National Grasslands, bringing the total National Forest System lands to million acres. Forests are the dominant vegetation of national parks in the National Capital Region Network (NCRN) and the surrounding area.

Approximately two-thirds of this park land is forested. These forests are part of the Eastern Deciduous Forest that stretches from Florida to New England and southern Canada, and extends as far west as Louisiana and.

There are nine Forest Service Regions. The regions are broad geographic areas, usually including several states, encompassing National Forests and 20 National Grasslands.
